Surge protectors all look similar, but an adaptor, a multiplug and an extension lead each suit a different job. Here's how to choose, and what surge protection can and can't do.
What a surge is
A surge is a brief spike in voltage. In South Africa they're common when power is restored after load shedding, and during electrical storms. A spike can damage the power supplies inside TVs, routers, decoders, consoles and chargers, sometimes without any visible sign until the device stops working.
A surge protector diverts that excess energy away from your devices. Two things it doesn't do:
- It doesn't keep devices running when the power goes off. For that you need a UPS.
- It can't guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike. During a severe storm, unplugging expensive electronics is still the safest option.
Which type do you need?
One important device: a 1-way adaptor
Plug it into the wall, then plug your device into it. It's the simplest way to protect a single TV, decoder or router.
- 1-way high-surge TV adaptor: for a TV, decoder or sound bar
- 1-way high-surge network adaptor: for a router or modem
- 2-way high-surge router adaptor: for a router and fibre box together
Several devices in one place: a multiplug
A multiplug turns one wall socket into several protected outlets. It's best for a TV cabinet, gaming setup or desk. The short 0.5m cable keeps things tidy.
- 4-way multiplug: bedside or small desk
- 12-way medium-surge multiplug: home office or entertainment unit
- 12-way high-surge multiplug: expensive gear like a TV, console and PC

An extension lead adds reach as well as protection, which helps in big rooms and garages.
Medium or high surge?
Switched sells both. Choose high-surge for your most expensive or sensitive electronics, like TVs, consoles, PCs and routers. Medium-surge suits everyday items like chargers, lamps and smaller devices.
Safety tips
- Don't plug multiplugs into each other (daisy-chaining).
- Keep heaters, kettles and other high-power appliances off multiplugs.
- Fully unroll extension leads while in use so the cable doesn't overheat.
- Replace a protector that's damaged, scorched, or has absorbed a big surge. The protective parts wear out over time.
