If your TV has a good picture but no apps, or its apps have stopped updating, you don't need a new TV. A streaming box or stick plugs into an HDMI port and adds apps like Netflix and YouTube. Here's how to pick one.
What you need
- A free HDMI port on your TV. Almost every flat-screen TV has one.
- An internet connection, over Wi-Fi or a network cable if the device has a port.
- Your streaming subscriptions. The device gives you the apps; the services are paid separately.
Box or stick?
A TV box sits next to the TV. Boxes usually have more room for ports and storage, and they're easy to position for a good Wi-Fi signal.
A TV stick plugs straight into the HDMI port and hides behind the screen. That makes it a tidy choice for wall-mounted TVs. Sticks are powered through a USB cable, and some TVs' USB ports don't supply enough power, so use the included adapter if your stick has one.
Why certified devices matter
Devices certified by Google, like the Xiaomi TV Box S (2nd Gen), run Google TV with the Play Store and official versions of the big streaming apps. Some uncertified boxes can't install certain apps officially, or play some services at lower quality. If streaming quality matters most to you, a certified device is the safer choice.

4K: what you'll actually see
A 4K device only shows a 4K picture on a 4K TV. On a Full HD TV, it plays in Full HD. You'll also need a fast enough connection: Netflix recommends at least 15 Mbps for 4K streaming.
Protect your setup
Power returning after load shedding can send a spike through your TV and streaming device. A high-surge TV adaptor is a small cost to protect both. For typing searches and passwords, a keyboard with touchpad is easier than the remote.
